About US

Boerne Aquaplex is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 2019.

The inclusive mission of Boerne Aquaplex — to serve the instruction, recreation, and competition aquatic needs of schools, organizations, and individuals of all ages and abilities in the region around and including Boerne — has its roots in the confluence of three important local trends.

In the last several years (Covid era excluded), the Boerne Blaze Special Olympics swimming program has sent growing numbers of its athletes and unified partners to Area and State competitions and brought home dozens of medals. At the same time, the number of competitive and developmental swimmers served by Boerne Blaze has continued to grow. The only pool available to the program for practice is an aging, non-regulation-length indoor pool at the Benedictine Sisters convent in Boerne, which also serves as a health and wellness center.

Second, Boerne has become an increasingly desirable place to live because of its schools and small-town culture. The growth of new housing — attributed in part to the expansion of I-10 from San Antonio to Bandera Road in Boerne — is attracting more newcomers, as well. Kendall County itself is among the fastest-growing counties in Texas.

Third, while an aquatic resource is often identified in surveys as a quality-of-life priority for Boerne, other, more-pressing city needs have taken precedent. The current outdoor Boerne City Pool serves some of the need, but it is limited by weather and seasonality.

In 2019, a small group of parents and business leaders decided the time was right to develop an aquatic center to address these trends. They formed a nonprofit and then had to deal with Covid restrictions. In 2022, the group partnered with a local nonprofit that is developing a residential setting for adults with disabilities and community center to develop a master plan to make both projects a reality.
